The beach at Qui-si-Sana in Sliema has been temporarily closed after a road works contractor damaged a drainage pipe, causing a sewage leak into the swimming area. The Sliema Local Council announced the closure, alerting the public to the contamination risk. The Water Services Corporation (WSC), which is responsible for Malta's sewage system, is carrying out repairs to the damaged pipe.
The council and the WSC said they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as soon as available. "Until the repairs are completed and the relevant authorities confirm that the water is once again safe for bathing, we kindly urge the public to respect the temporary closure and refrain from swimming in the area," the Sliema Local Council said in a statement.
The identity of the road works contractor that caused the damage has not been named publicly, and no repair completion date has been announced.
