Residents and activists from Żurrieq and several neighbouring localities gathered on Sunday to demand a clear answer on whether the Lands Authority had approved access to public land tied to a planned 11,500 square metre project at Nigret. The protest was organised by Il-Kollettiv. Participants called on political leaders to take a definitive public stand on the project.
Il-Kollettiv said those at Sunday's protest questioned whether any Lands Authority clearance had been granted for the public land linked to the Nigret scheme. The authority had not published a public position by the time of the protest. Participants raised concerns about the density of development proposed for Nigret, the prospect of rezoning public land to accommodate the scheme, and the principle of opening public land to a project of this scale.
Each objection turns on whether the Lands Authority has moved to advance the process. Momentum joined Żurrieq residents in calling for the development to be stopped, adding a political dimension to a campaign that had until then been community-led. The party's involvement means pressure is now being applied through both civil and political channels.
Residents' calls for politicians to take a stand reflect frustration that elected representatives have remained publicly uncommitted while the clearance question goes unanswered. Il-Kollettiv and the residents who gathered on Sunday are pressing relevant ministers and planning authorities to account for their positions on rezoning and public land use at Nigret before any further steps are taken.
