Abela Sworn In as PM, Borg as Opposition Leader in New Malta

Robert Abela was sworn in as Prime Minister and Alex Borg took the oath as Leader of the Opposition as Malta's Parliament convened for the first sitting of its new legislature following the 2026 general election. Proceedings on the day began with a mass held at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, after which elected officials proceeded to Parliament for the formal swearing-in ceremony.
Carmelo Abela took the role of Speaker of the House and chaired the sitting, with Bernard Grech, the Nationalist Party's former leader, chosen to serve as Deputy Speaker. President Myriam Spiteri Debono delivered an address to Parliament, commending the country's democratic institutions and the orderly transition that ushered in the new legislature. Following his swearing-in, Borg posted a message on social media alongside footage from the ceremony. "Always with you. Not with words, but with actions," he wrote.
