Malta's ambitious light-rail rapid transit system is set to become operational in the early 2030s, according to Transport Minister Chris Bonett, who detailed the implementation timeline for the island's comprehensive 15-year national transport strategy.

Construction Timeline for La Vallette Line

The La Vallette line, designated as the first route of Malta's metro network, will commence construction within the next five to ten years. Minister Bonett explained that once building work begins, the initial phase connecting Malta International Airport to Valletta should require three to four years to complete. This timeline positions the first operational segment for service during the first half of the 2030s.

The complete La Vallette line, extending northward to St. Paul's Bay, is projected for completion within 10 to 15 years. The minister emphasized that the system's design aims to provide convenient station access for residents across Malta's northern and southern regions, enabling rapid cross-country travel.

Preparatory Work and Sliema Connections

Over the next 18 months, authorities will conduct extensive preparatory assessments including geotechnical investigations, urban planning studies, financial modeling, and site analysis. The first geotechnical tests are scheduled to begin on May 4, 2026, in Floriana, followed by Qormi the subsequent week. These investigations will determine whether stations should be constructed underground, at ground level, or elevated.

Of particular relevance to Sliema residents, the transport plan includes the introduction of a Sliema-Buġibba-Gozo fast ferry service within the next two years. Additionally, new parking facilities near the Sliema quay are planned to support the integrated transport network. These developments will complement the existing transport infrastructure and provide enhanced connectivity options for local residents.

Integrated Transport Network Evolution

The comprehensive strategy extends beyond the metro system to encompass multiple transport modes. Plans include the complete electrification of Gozo's bus fleet, a Marsascala-Valletta fast ferry service, and the implementation of the C-SAM network's first phase. Walking promotion initiatives and carpooling programs will also form part of the cultural shift away from car dependency.

Minister Bonett stressed the importance of cross-party cooperation for the project's success, describing it as a non-political initiative requiring unified support for future generations. While the overarching framework remains fixed, specific implementation details may evolve as the project progresses through its various phases.
