Approximately 113 kilograms of suspected cocaine have been seized at Malta Freeport Terminal following a joint operation by the Malta Tax and Customs Administration and the Malta Police Force Drug Squad on Tuesday 9 June. Customs officials identified the container as suspicious through risk-based targeting during routine screening. Detailed scanning came first, followed by a physical inspection that turned up the suspected cocaine hidden among legitimate cargo inside the unit.

The container had originated in Moin, Costa Rica and was declared bound for Libya, meaning it was passing through Malta purely in transit. Once the find was made, the Drug Squad secured the area and began further investigative procedures on site. The Malta Tax and Customs Administration acknowledged the assistance of Malta Freeport Terminals during the operation.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened. Investigations are ongoing to establish who was behind the attempted trafficking. Whether any arrests have been made has not been confirmed by authorities, and laboratory analysis to verify the substance as cocaine had not been completed at the time of the announcement.

Authorities described the interception as one of several recent successful drug seizures at Malta Freeport involving contraband concealed in transhipment containers, a pattern they say has become a recurring feature of operations at the facility.
