Opposition Leader Alex Borg has called for a magisterial inquiry into events at Corradino Correctional Facility, arguing that an internal investigation by prison authorities falls short of what the situation demands. Speaking on NET Television, Borg said: "We believe there shouldn't just be an internal inquiry. " His demand addresses two overlapping controversies.
Prison authorities launched an internal inquiry after discovering an internet-connected laptop in the cell of Adrian Agius, known as 'Ta' Maksar', a convicted murderer held in high security. Reports have also emerged that privileged lawyer-client conversations inside the prison may have been monitored or recorded. Borg said he was shocked by those reports.
The Chamber of Advocates lodged a formal protest in court against the suspected surveillance, and court lawyers in Malta and Gozo were expected to strike on Monday in response. A magisterial inquiry, Borg said, would be independent and can compel evidence in a way an internal review cannot. The Chamber of Advocates and court lawyers have each taken formal steps demanding exactly that kind of independent scrutiny.
Borg made his remarks the day after Parliament's opening, where he also outlined Opposition priorities: weekly Prime Minister's Questions, the imminent announcement of the Nationalist Party's Shadow Cabinet, and childcare facilities at Parliament to make it more accessible to MPs with young families. He said the Opposition would remain constructive but firm, supporting beneficial measures while holding the Government to account.
