The PN Executive Committee met on Thursday and approved the statutory leadership appointment process following the party's general election defeat on 30 May. The PN General Council is scheduled for 20 June 2025 at Dar Centrali, the party's headquarters. Under the PN statute, the Executive Committee must convene a General Council within three months of the official publication of a general election result to launch a leadership election and discuss the campaign outcome.
Regional assemblies will be held across Malta and Gozo in the week preceding the 20 June meeting. A report on those assemblies, compiled by PN president for political research Professor Mary Anne Lauri, will be presented to councillors on the day. Speakers at the General Council will include General Council president Mark Anthony Sammut, secretary-general Charles Bonello, deputy leader Alex Perici Calascione, and party leader Alex Borg.
The council will instruct the party's Electoral, Records and Data Commission to formally begin the leadership appointment process. Borg, who became PN leader in October 2024 and held the role for less than a year before the election, will require a formal confidence vote from party councillors to be confirmed as leader, even if he faces no challenger.
" The 30 May result was the PN's fourth consecutive general election defeat. Labour won with a majority of approximately 22,000 votes, roughly half the gap recorded in 2022. " He pointed to vote increases across every district and noted his own close to 22,000 first-count votes, described as a record for a PN leader.
"I am determined to continue serving as leader. I didn't sign up to be a leader for seven months," he said.
