Andrew Agius, a practising veterinarian, has been elected to Malta's House of Representatives as a Nationalist Party MP for the Seventh District, becoming the first vet ever to take a seat in parliament. Agius secured his place through a PN casual election count, the mechanism used to fill a parliamentary vacancy without triggering a full by-election.
"I'm extremely proud to be the first vet in Malta's parliament," he said shortly after the result, adding that his legs were shaking with excitement. Veterinarians work across public health, animal welfare, food safety, and agricultural regulation — areas that come before the legislature — and Agius's election gives the profession a direct voice in those debates for the first time.
Agius is the son of former PN Parliamentary Secretary Francis Agius, making him the second member of the family to hold elected or appointed office under the Nationalist banner. If the claim of a genuine first is confirmed, his election marks a concrete shift in the professional make-up of the House of Representatives.
