Alex Borg was the only candidate to submit a declaration of interest for the Nationalist Party leadership when the nomination period closed on Wednesday, 1 July 2026. No other applications were received. The PN's Electoral, Records and Data Commission confirmed that only one declaration of interest — from Borg — was received for the post.
The call for expressions of interest ran for seven days under Article 90a of the Partit Nazzjonalista statute. It opened on 24 June 2026, the same day the PN General Council launched the leadership election process, and Borg submitted his declaration the following day. Borg has led the party since October 2025 and is seeking confirmation following the PN's defeat in the 30 May 2026 general election.
The party statute requires a leadership vote after every general election. The Electoral Commission informed the Candidates Commission, which will carry out verification procedures to confirm Borg satisfies the criteria set out in the party statute. Once the Candidates Commission submits its report to the PN Administrative Council and Electoral Commission, the Electoral Commission must open a five-day nominations window within three days of receiving that report.
Only a candidate who expressed interest and passed due diligence may submit a nomination during that window. At the General Council on 24 June, Borg acknowledged the electoral setback while noting positive developments: more than 13,000 additional votes tallied relative to 2022, victory in six electoral districts, and an 18,000-vote swing favouring the party. He pledged the PN would establish a presence among the people deeper than ever before, with representation in every locality and community.
He also proposed creating two deputy leader positions—one focused on party operations, one on parliamentary work.
