Ivan Falzon is the frontrunner to become the next Chief Executive Officer of the Labour Party, sources close to the party say. The Labour Party has not made an official announcement, and no formal offer or acceptance has been confirmed. Falzon would succeed Leonid McKay, who was announced as the new CEO of Transport Malta on Tuesday.
Falzon currently serves as CEO of the Gozo Regional Development Authority, a statutory body established in September 2020 to oversee Gozo's socio-economic development and regional development strategy. His ties to the Labour administration date to 2013, when he worked in the secretariat of Parliamentary Secretary Franco Mercieca, who held the Active Ageing and Persons with Disability brief.
Mercieca returned to Parliament in the May 2025 general election. From that early position, Falzon moved through senior executive roles across major state entities. He ran Mater Dei Hospital from 2014 to 2020, then led the Water Services Corporation until 2022, before taking on the CEO role at Infrastructure Malta later that year.
He stepped down from Infrastructure Malta in January 2024, coinciding with a government reshuffle that saw Chris Bonett assume the Transport Ministry from Aaron Farrugia. Steve Ellul succeeded him in the post. Falzon is the party leadership's preferred candidate to oversee Labour's administrative operations following the May 2025 election.
If appointed, he would modernise the party's headquarters and streamline internal operations. The Labour Party has not confirmed or commented on the reported appointment.
