Every member of Malta's Civil Protection Department has obtained the NFPA 1001 international firefighting certification, Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield announced during his first official visit to the department. NFPA 1001 is an internationally recognised standard for firefighter qualification. It tests personnel on fire behaviour, protective equipment, search and rescue and hazardous materials awareness.
All serving members now hold the credential. Bedingfield said the certification reflects years of sustained investment in personnel, training, equipment and technology. He added that the government remains committed to providing the department with the resources needed to respond effectively to emergencies.
The department managed multiple fires during a recent heatwave. Bedingfield thanked Civil Protection Department personnel for their work during that period. Bedingfield also cited a World Bank report commending Malta's emergency preparedness and response.
The report described the Civil Protection Department as a professional service with advanced training, specialised capabilities and strong coordination with other agencies.
