Malta ranked first in the European Union for business social media adoption in 2025, with 88.2% of enterprises employing ten or more people using social media. Finland came second at 87.6%, followed by Denmark at 86.1%. Bulgaria, Croatia and Hungary sat at the bottom of the EU rankings, trailing all other member states in the share of businesses active on social platforms.

Across the EU, 63.6% of enterprises used social media in 2025, up from 61.1% in 2023. Malta's figure sits roughly 25 percentage points above that average. Breaking the EU numbers down by company size: small businesses across the bloc report a 60.6% adoption rate, medium-sized firms 76.2%, and large enterprises 89.1%.

Malta's national figure of 88.2%, which spans all qualifying businesses regardless of size, places it close to the large-enterprise benchmark for the EU as a whole, suggesting Maltese companies across the size spectrum are adopting social media at rates that would be considered high even among Europe's biggest firms. Enterprises cite increasing online visibility as a primary motivation, alongside marketing products and services, communicating with customers and partners, and supporting internal collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

The EU-wide rate has risen more than two percentage points in two years. Malta's first-place finish puts it at the front of that trend.
