Sliema security patrols surge during peak tourist season

The Maltese government launched a coordinated security operation on Saturday 15 August 2026, timed to the peak of the summer tourist season and the Santa Marija public holiday weekend. The Malta Police Force, the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) and LESA (Local Enforcement System Agency) are jointly increasing patrols across Sliema, St Julian's, Paceville, Swieqi and Gżira.

AFM soldiers are providing what the government calls specialised presence operations–working alongside police and LESA officers to deter antisocial behaviour, violence and petty crime and to respond faster when incidents occur. Soldiers had already been deployed to Swieqi earlier that week and enhanced nighttime patrols had been running in Swieqi and Pembroke for several weeks before the announcement.

The operation follows complaints from residents about disruptive behaviour linked to tourists, particularly around nightlife venues. Earlier in August, the minimum on-the-spot fine for certain public order offences was doubled from €25 to €50. Non-residents who accumulate fines totalling €200 or more now risk deportation proceedings.

Home Affairs and Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield said the government would deploy resources wherever needed. "Our message is clear: we will not allow anyone to compromise the safety and peace of our communities. Wherever a greater presence and more resources are needed, we will be there," he said.

He added that all law enforcement agencies had his full support to strengthen their operational capacity. The ministry said enforcement efforts would continue to adapt to conditions in each locality across Malta.
