Sliema Wanderers seek first points against reigning champions

Sliema Wanderers face reigning Malta Premier League champions Floriana in the Old Firm Derby at the Centenary Stadium, Ta' Qali tonight, kick-off 6.30pm. Both clubs arrive on sharply different form. Floriana opened their title defence with a 3–0 win over Birżebbuġa St. Peter's, while Sliema lost 2–0 to Hibernians and have yet to collect a point this season.

Sliema were the busiest club in the summer transfer window, signing goalkeeper Henry Bonello, midfielder Teddy Teuma, Alex Satariano, Brian Gambarte and Belgian winger Anthony Limbombe. Under manager Branko Nisevic, the squad underwent significant overhaul aimed at closing the gap to Malta's top clubs, yet the Hibernians defeat has put immediate pressure on those ambitions.

Floriana's recent record against Sliema adds to that pressure. Their last competitive meeting, in March, ended 1–0 to Floriana and the defending champions showed no sign of decline in Round 1 with their comfortable victory over Birżebbuġa. The two clubs have met more than 290 times, making this the most-played fixture in Maltese football and giving the derby weight well beyond any single result.

Two other Round 2 fixtures take place tonight. Marsaxlokk, who drew 1–1 with newly promoted Balzan in Round 1, meet Hibernians at 9pm at the Centenary Stadium. On Friday 22 August, Żabbar St. Patrick's host Birżebbuġa St. Peter's at 9pm.

Birkirkara, who beat Gżira United 4–0 in Round 1, take on Ħamrun Spartans in a midweek match during the feast week of Sant'Elena. Ħamrun lost their opening game 2–0 to Mosta in Marco Amelia's first official match as head coach, a defeat that continued Mosta's strong form from the previous season. Gżira United v Valletta closes Round 2 on Sunday.

Valletta began the season with a 4–2 comeback win over Żabbar, recovering from 2–0 down to turn the match around in the second half. Round 1 produced 19 goals across six matches.
